Racing legend Sir Stirling Moss returned to racing at the weekend, taking part in the Silverstone Classic meeting.
The Silverstone event was the first time Sir Stirling, 80, has raced since breaking both ankles in an accident at his London home.
At the wheel of his 1956 1.5-litre OSCA, Sir Stirling and co-driver Ian Nuthall were leading their class in the one-hour RAC Woodcote Trophy sportscar race ahead, of musician Chris Rea's Lotus 6, with just 10 minutes to go.
But a gearbox problem forced the OSCA to retire from 19th position overall.
“She was stuck in fourth gear and I couldn’t get it to come out," said Moss. "That’s a bit too high a gear to become jammed in. Third I could have coped with. But we were flying and I’ve really enjoyed it.”
Rea and co-driver Richard Hodson went on to win the class.
