It was Clive James who said of Murray Walker that ‘in his quieter moments he sounds like his trousers are on fire’. That enthusiasm for all things motorsport – and particularly for racing motorbikes, his first love – is as strong as ever. Murray came to Coventry University on May 5 to talk about his career and give his views on the state of F1 today. What he had to say was fascinating. How can we make F1 less dull, asked one member of the audience – but Murray was having none of it, explaining how it was still a fascinating sport if you knew how to watch. There was plenty more, with both entertaining and sharp comments on his former co-commentator James Hunt, F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, plans for extending the F1 calendar, and much more. You can play the video of the hour-long interview above, and it's also available as an audio podcast. |
