What are the timescales involved for writing and publishing books?

It's not unusual to 'deliver' a book to a publisher a year after the contract is signed. It can then take another six months before the book is printed and on sale.

That said, some of the books I've written have been required in just a couple of months, to meet pre-planned publishing schedules. You can only do a decent job of that if you already have a lot of information to hand about the subject. Research takes time.
